What is a digital business card?

A digital business card is a shareable version of a paper card: your name, role and contact details on a page or a saved contact file, passed on by link or code. It is good for handing over details and limited when someone wants to judge the business itself.

What is usually on one

  • Name, business name and role.
  • Phone, email and sometimes an address or service area.
  • One or two social or website links.
  • A way to save the details to a phone, on some services.

How they are shared

Most are shared as a link or by scanning a code. Some services also use tap-to-share cards or phone wallet passes, which need extra hardware or an app.

Whether that matters depends on how you meet people. If most of your first contact happens in a message or a bio, a link is doing all the work anyway.

Where a contact card runs out of room

  • It cannot show the work, which is what most buying decisions rest on.
  • It cannot answer price, availability or turnaround questions.
  • It has no room for products, services or a range.
  • It gives a stranger no reason to trust you beyond a job title.

What to use instead when the business is the point

If people already know you and simply need your number, a digital card is fine. If they are deciding whether to buy from you, they need the things a card leaves out: photographs, a description of the work, prices where relevant, and a clear next step.
